Date: Saturday, 26 June 2027 Venue: Sportplaza Zuiderpark, Rotterdam

Why Is This Festival Important?

Rotterdam is one of the most diverse cities in Europe, home to people from many different cultures and backgrounds. The African Festival Rotterdam has been created to provide a platform where communities can come together to celebrate their heritage, share their traditions, and strengthen social connections. The festival is about much more than entertainment. It is an opportunity to promote understanding, inclusion, and positive community engagement. Through music, food, culture, sports, family activities, and networking opportunities, the event aims to create an environment where people can learn from one another and build meaningful relationships.

The First Edition

The 2027 festival marks the first edition of what SLHO Rotterdam hopes will become an annual event in the city of Rotterdam. As a first edition, the festival represents a significant milestone for our organization and an important opportunity to showcase the richness and diversity of African cultures while encouraging community participation and intercultural dialogue.

What Visitors Can Expect

The festival will feature:
  • Live music and entertainment
  • Free BBQ for visitors
  • African cultural displays and performances
  • Games and activities for children and families
  • Community networking opportunities

  • Opportunities for volunteering and civic participation
The event is designed to be family-friendly, inclusive, and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Building Stronger Communities

One of the key goals of the festival is to strengthen community relationships and promote active participation in society. SLHO believes that cultural events play an important role in creating opportunities for people to meet, exchange ideas, celebrate diversity, and develop a greater sense of belonging. By bringing together residents, community organizations, volunteers, sponsors, and local partners, the festival contributes to social cohesion and community development in Rotterdam.

An Invitation to Everyone

The African Festival Rotterdam & Free BBQ 2027 is open to everyone, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, age, or background. We warmly invite families, friends, community groups, local organizations, and residents from across Rotterdam and beyond to join us for what promises to be a memorable day of culture, friendship, and celebration.

Looking Ahead

SLHO Rotterdam is committed to making this first edition a success and building a strong foundation for future editions of the festival. With the support of our members, volunteers, partners, sponsors, and the wider community, we look forward to creating an event that celebrates diversity, strengthens communities, and promotes unity for many years to come.

SLHO Organises Funeral and Burial Ceremony in Honour of Sister Joyce.

Date: 23 September 2026 Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands The Sierra Leone Humanitarian Organisation (SLHO) Rotterdam successfully organised the funeral and burial ceremony of Sister Joyce, the beloved wife of our member, Mr. Charles Aba Conteh, and the loving mother of Penita, Kinsly, and Kelssy. The ceremony brought together family members, friends, SLHO members, and representatives of the wider Sierra Leonean, Surinamese, and Dutch communities to pay their final respects and celebrate the life of a dearly loved wife, mother, relative, and friend. The large turnout demonstrated the strong spirit of unity and solidarity that exists within our communities. The funeral service was officiated by Pastor Rolland and Pastor Clement, who delivered inspiring words of comfort, hope, and faith to the bereaved family and all those in attendance. A moving tribute was delivered by Joyce’s sister, Manuela, who shared cherished memories and reflected on the impact Joyce had on the lives of those who knew and loved her. Mr. Charles Aba Conteh also delivered an emotional tribute to his beloved wife, expressing gratitude for the years they shared together and thanking everyone for their prayers, support, and solidarity during this difficult period. The Chairman of SLHO Rotterdam, Mr. Mustapha Kabba, welcomed attendees on behalf of the organisation and conveyed SLHO’s heartfelt condolences to the Conteh family, emphasizing the importance of unity and community support during times of loss. The programme was professionally coordinated by Mr. Sorie Ibrahim Kargbo, who served as Master of Ceremonies (MC) and guided the proceedings with dignity and respect. SLHO members played a vital role in ensuring the success of the ceremony. From coordinating logistics and assisting guests to preparing and serving food, our volunteers worked tirelessly to provide a dignified and well-organised farewell. Their commitment reflected the organisation’s core values of compassion, service, and community support. The Leadership of SLHO Rotterdam extends its sincere appreciation to all members, volunteers, community leaders, friends, and well-wishers who contributed in one way or another. Your presence, prayers, and support provided comfort and strength to the Conteh family during this difficult time. As we share photographs from the ceremony, we remember not only a day of farewell but also a powerful example of community coming together in love and support. The gathering served as a reminder that, even in moments of sorrow, we find strength in standing together and supporting one another. On behalf of the leadership and membership of SLHO Rotterdam, we once again express our deepest condolences to Mr. Charles Aba Conteh, Penita, Kinsly, Kelssy, and the entire Conteh family. “Gone from our sight, but forever in our hearts.” May the soul of Sister Joyce rest in perfect peace, and may her memory continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
